The Kopay Divisional Hospital in the Jaffna District in northern Sri Lanka is one of the primary medical care institutions in the country

Sri Lanka scales up preventive health care, with impressive results- Anna Bjerde, World Bank Managing Director of Operations

A recent visit to Sri Lanka took me to the Kopay Divisional Hospital in the Jaffna District in the northern part of the country. For the close to 16,000 people living in the area, this hospital serves as the first point of care.

Non-communicable diseases are a leading cause of mortality and morbidity in Sri Lanka, accounting for 80 percent of deaths and 77 percent of disability-adjusted life years

Sri Lanka has an impressive track record of achieving good health care at a low cost, and this success lies in part in the health system’s ability to adapt to change

Sri Lanka’s human capital indicators are among the best in South Asia, and it is heartening to see a continued commitment to health care, even in times of hardship

dengue

Dengue update

Total of 31162 suspected dengue cases for the year 2020 and 4090 suspected dengue cases were reported to the Epidemiology Unit from all over the island from January 2023 to up to now, .

Approximately 30.2 % of dengue cases were reported from the Western province. The highest numbers of dengue cases were reported during the 29th week of 2017.

The outbreak situation in 2017 warranted extensive and regular removal of possible mosquito breeding sites from the environment, along with strengthened patient education on management of fever which resulted in a relatively low mortality.

It is very important to seek medical attention in the event of fever and to do relevant laboratory investigations at least by day three of the illness.
